Piano, guitar, and kids rock band lessons in Juneau, Alaska

Welcome to Nagoonberries Music. I am a piano, guitar, and kids rock band teacher in downtown Juneau. Please browse the site to see what I offer and get in touch via the contact information to the right.

Individual piano and guitar lessons
I love teaching students of all ages, child through adult, to play piano and guitar. Being able to play music has allowed me to have many amazing opportunities in my life and has brought me a great deal of joy. My goal is for my students to have the same. I strive to make my music lessons relaxed and enjoyable. I want them to be a positive, encouraging experience. Individual lessons are tailored to each student’s interests, needs, and goals.

I also offer additional enrichment opportunities that students can add on to their lessons:

Songwriting, composition, and extended music theory: This is for students who are interested in writing songs or composing their own music. Students will learn additional music theory as it relates to writing music, how to compose melodies and harmonies, and practice writing and notating original pieces.

Alternate rock band instrument lesson: This is for students who are enjoying piano or guitar but want to try learning the basics of another rock band instrument: piano, guitar, bass, or drums. Instruments are provided for this enrichment.

Kids rock band
This is a fun and highly motivating program in which students learn to play a rock band instrument in a band setting. The focus is on playing in a group and developing the interpersonal and musical skills needed for a successful band. Students choose between keyboard, guitar, bass, or drums. Rock band meets weekly for 45 minutes. No previous experience is needed and instruments are provided for use at band practices. Come rock out!

About me
I was born and raised in Juneau. I attended the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton school of music as an undergraduate and have a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of Alaska. I am certified to teach kindergarten through 8th grade general education and I taught elementary music at Mendenhall River Community School in the Juneau school district from 2006-2017.

I started playing piano at age seven (thanks Mrs. Anderson!) and have continued all my life. I picked up the guitar about ten years ago so I could accompany my elementary classes, and that led me down the path of learning rock electric guitar. I’ve taught private piano and guitar lessons for ten years through my own studio Nagoonberries Music, as adjunct faculty at the University of Alaska, and with Thrush Hill Music.

I’ve played in many groups and accompanied a variety of artists in Juneau. I play in local pop/rock supergroup Susu and the Prophets. I was the music director for Juneau Lyric Opera’s “Who’s Your Diva” show for three years and for Perseverance Theatre’s productions of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “The Who’s Tommy.”
